Of course I knew that one was planned for that day (although I had forgotten), but I did not realize that it was something that required permission. This made me a bit nervous. I asked if it was something that would get me in trouble and after some hemming and hawing, I was told not. So, placing my job on the line, I said sure.
I finally made it out sometime later, thinking I had missed the whole thing and was safe. Actually, I had probably forgotten all about it (this was ONE hectic weekend). I stopped by the Smoking Dragon Pub, also called the back pub, the small pub, or the new pub, because it is all three, to see my girl who was bartending, making more money than I do, and to count some beer to see if we needed more, not realizing that this was the end-point of the Walk and that the Walk was indeed almost done. Leah had come with me to help, and Geof, our President showed up a bit later.
So, there we all are, done with the counting and about to head off to "make the rounds" when there is a commotion up at the front of the pub. Leah and I are heading out the back when I notice Geof being dragged off by one of our cast folks, Kimber. I poked my head around the door frame, and said, "Oh look, it must be the Wench Walk," at which point, Kimber spotted me and headed straight my way. Well, there was nothing to do but take it like a man. Needless to say, much bru-ha-ha ensued as the president and I struggled to maintain some shred of professional dignity, and I bore the battle scars proudly the rest of the day.
Wenches need not ever ask to Walk at Hawkwood.
Sincerely,
James Echols
