The Faire grounds themselves cover almost sixteen acres if not more, with booths, pavilions, rides, stages, the lists, the Society for Creative Anachronisms (SCA) area and other sundry entertainments and diversions everywhere. According to THE SCRIBE, the Kansas City Renaissance Festival boasts 12 stages, 160 vendors booths and has an attendance of over 200,000 during its annual eight-week run. I've included here a copy of the map of the Faire which each patron receives at the gate, but its sheer size prevented me from making it readable. The orginal map was printed on an 11x14 inch broadsheet...and even then some of the fine print was difficult for me to read! On the other hand, it gives a fair idea just how big the KC RenFaire really is.
It took me about four hours, for example, just to browse the arts'n crafts booth, starting from the Main Gate (lower right on the map), bypassing the Lists (lower middle), going past the Yorkshire Wharf to the Olde Northe Bramble (lower left to middle left), into the Wildewood (upper left), then to the SCA Dell (upper middle), around to Cotswold Commons (middle right) and back to the Main Gate. And that doesn't include my time spent listening to the musicians play, watching the noonday parade of Shirefolk or sampling the foodvendors' wares!
In 1999, the Kansas City Renaissance Festival will open on September 4th for a 16-day run (weekends only) ending October 17th. The Festival is actually located in Bonner Springs, Kansas. To reach the site, go west from downtown Kansas City on I-70, take the Bonner Springs exit (first exit after toll booth) and go north half mile. Follow the signs!
