        THE 1998 SCARBOROUGH RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL
        by Frank Hui

Another addition to the site was a climbing wall which even Gyro of the Flaming Idiots tackled (Photo, left). He managed to get to the top in seconds, as one would hope!

Also new was Rick Stratton of Renaissance Vaudeville who once a day performed an hour-long hypnosis act (Photo, below). He at first would send out a general hypnotic suggestion and bring up those responsive onto stage. It was not unusual to see thirty people onstage at any one time! He would then weed out the less responsive subjects and put the remainder into a variety of scenarios from entering a fishing contest to cavorting with aliens on Mars.

Another act I've missed in the past was Thom Sellectomy, the sword swallower (Photo, left). Sword swallowing is a rarely performed skill with less than twenty practitioners in this country. Besides swallowing blades short, long and wavy, this fellow also sticks a variety of things up his nose--including sunglasses and nails!

If sweet and romantic vocals are more to your taste, however, Queen Anne's Lace is the perfect repast. These lovely ladies (Photo, below) perform songs with an enchanting and lilting sound that can please any soul!
