THE 1998 SCARBOROUGH RENAISSANCE FESTIVAL by Frank Hui
Perhaps the most outrageous act at Scarborough were the "Tartan Terrors". I would describe them as an act that does full twisting somersaults across the division between art and lunacy! Their act is divided between twisted comedy skits and superb highland dancing (Photos, above and left). Here, they team up with "The Rogues of Scotland" to perform an hour long ceili. During the wildest version of this show--at the 5:30pm performance--they also add on the incedible comedy act "Hey Nunnie Nunnie" to help them do this very extreme take on catholic school girls and men in kilts (Photo, below).
What is also nice about this faire is that there is special "day's end" entertainment going on. Bard O'Neil & Company perform at the King's Pub. The juggling and acrobatic acts get together to do the Feast of Fools where they try out some looney bits. At one show, Danger Dan caught his pants on fire diving through a hoop (fire also seems to be a recurring theme at Scarborough, eh?). And after the Tartans perform comes the pub sing where the story arc is resolved and different groups perform. One particularly fun number is done by the combined talents of the Corsairs, Queen Anne's Lace and Spoonfed Tribe in a special rendition of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight". By the end everyone is exuberantly dancing and rocking on stage, including the Queen (Photo, below).
It is easy to see now what I meant earlier by "zany"--and that a full time can be had here. And that's the way I like it! By the way, even at the end of an exhausting day, I still like to indulge in a little lunacy of my own--with my favorite "sport" during faire time, my friend Lise (Photo, below)!
