    Scarborough Renaissance Faire

      Map of Scarborough Faire

Mike and Pam Harris in costume at the Scarborough Faire For Ryleh, Scarborough Faire was especially memorable for two reasons. First, it was his first Faire which he attended in costume. Second--and equally important--he got to meet his email penpals, Mike and Pam Harris of Houston (photo, left), for the first time there. Both have a keen (dare I say "wicked"?) sense of humor as well as a fine appreciation for good music, colorful costumes and outstanding entertainment. It was their second year at Scarborough, so they acted as Ryleh's guides to all the fun and excitement which the Faire offered. Despite the fact that Pam had broken her foot in an accident only days before, they were both more than helpful and knowledgable in showing me around the grounds. Ryleh was much obliged to both of them!

According to THE SCRIBE, Scarborough Faire boasts 10 stages, 185 vendors booths and has an attendance of over 175,000 during its annual eight-week run. To give some idea of the Faire's layout, a copy of the map of Scarborough--which was scanned from the extensive program guide published as "Ye Olde Newes" by Cy and Libby Stapleton--is offered, above. (note: the blue line through the map has no significance other than that it is an artifact of the scanning process--and Ryleh was just too bonelazy to remove it!).

In 1999, Scarborough Faire will open on the 17th of April and close on June 6th, for a total run of twenty Faire days. To reach Scarborough from Dallas, take south I-35E to Waxahachie, exit 399A. If you're driving in from Fort Worth, take SH 287 southeast to I-35E, then south two miles to exit 399A. Impressively enough, there are official highway signs for Scarborough Faire just before the Interstate exit with more signs along the surface roads, making it easy to find the site!
