THE 1998 TEXAS RENAISSANCE FAIRE
by Frank Hui
Another new act that held a special fondness for me personally were the "Gypsy Dancers" (Photo, Below). Although new to TRF, this troupe dates back to the early 90's at Bristol where they were made up of classical trained dancers. For a time they had retired, but resurfaced here. They do some excellent dancing and involve many members of the audience in their act. In fact this was the act that inspired me to start videotaping shows at faire!
Finally we come to "Shakespeare's Shorts". I put them last because it took me til the final weekend to actually see these guys perform and get photos. They only did two or three shows a day and, well... the rain did the rest! They are an entertaining group of guys that are distinct from other parody Shakespeare acts. At TRF they did "Julius Caesar" with a member from the crowd playing Caesar. Here they are enacting the stabbing scene. See those blood and guts fly (Photo, Below)!
That about sums up my time at TRF this year. In spite of the continual bad weather I managed to enjoy myself a lot. This was partly due to the fact that I was able to make more frequent visits to TRF this year. Of course the rain wasn't the reason for that. I am looking forward to their 25th anniversary season next year and what they have planned in store then!
