Members of "The New Riders of the Golden Age" jousting troupe prepare to engage during the mid-afternoon tournament. Not only was the jousting fiercely authentic--so was the accompanying martial music! It seems there is a "Musicians' Loft" directly over the Royal Viewing Stand, where several drummers and trumpeteers were joined by the Scots pipers. Great music...and another nice touch!
This thoughtful, woodcarved Mage had found himself a place in the shade--and he wasn't going to move. In the heat of a Summer day, I can't say as I blame him much! There were several other similiar works of art scattered around the Faire grounds for "flavor"--as well as shaded benches much welcomed by weary patrons to rest their feet.
Would you believe FIFTY feet of swords, daggers, battleaxes and other sharp, pointy Medieval instruments of destruction???!? In this view of "Ye Silver Castle" (Ken Strock, Proprietor), one of the master swordsmiths declaims the finer points of his many blades to an interested patron.
Accompanied by fife and drum, patrons and players weave in and out holding broad, brightly-colored ribbons as they dance around the MRF Maypole. Incredibly and for the longest time, this was the only photo Ryleh had of an actual Maypole dance from all the Faires he had attended--although it still remains his first Maypole dance picture!
