Festivals and Tournaments of the Middle Ages and Renaissance were more than just markets or entertainment. Because towns and villages were often many days' travel apart and communication was limited, the Festival brought together friends and family; travellers who brought news of other places; craftsmen and merchants who might only be in your village once or twice a year entertainers and performers; and experts who taught a variety of skills. These festivals were very much like the state fairs of today. As such, there were plenty of activities for everyone to get involved in.
This year, the Withrow Renaissance Festival will be grander than ever. Numerous craftsmen and artists will be demonstrating their skills and talents in an interactive environment. Feel free to ask questions, touch and feel, and experience for yourself the methods used for thousands of years to create all these wonderous goods. This will be a wonderful learning experience for children and adults alike -- and one you won't soon forget!
Learn the art of armored combat through demonstrations and tournaments given by the Society for Creative Anachronism, a Middle Ages recreation group.
Be entertained as minstrels and bards wander the faire, bringing tales of honor and glory through song and story. Take in a performance on the main stage or visit a small
puppet theatre for an authentic 'Punch and Judy" style show.
Witness great acts of skill and valor as armoured knights show their skill on horseback at the joust as well as on foot against one another in valiant combat for the honor of the Queen and the entertainment of the crowd.
Learn the history of the crossbow, and watch as able marksmen demonstrate their skills in both the Medieval and Modern crossbow competitions. Then try your hand at the target with one of these powerful weapons of antiquity!
There are many games of skill - axe and knife throwing, crossbow shooting, and many childrens' games.
And of course, opportunities await around every corner to experience many things new and interesting. Who knows what kind of adventure you could have...
Or where you could find yourself...!
This years' festival also includes the Royal Court of Robert the Bruce, demonstrations by local falconers, the Royal Jousts, and feasting and merriment for all. Come visit us from October 8th through 10th in Huntsville, Arkansas. We are certain that you will enjoy your trip back in time at the Withrow Renaissance Festival and the 46th annual A.C.A.
