All that strenuous effort and strain sure can bring on a tremendous appetite...!
Members of the festival staff took turns serving each course at the feast. Whole roasted chickens and roasted corn-on-the-cob were also among the entrees served. In keeping with Medieval custom, using your fingers at table was well-accepted -- if not expected. Knives, forks and spoons were strictly optional!
Robert the Bruce raises the first of many toasts to the company and guests at the feast that evening. And aye, that is the head of the whole roast pig --with apple in mouth -- shown in the lower left corner of the photo. Needless to say, there was plenty of good food to go around!
For dinner entertainment, Jim Frey of Pettigrew told stories, harpists played and the company joined together at last in courtly dancing. Regretfully, "The Boar's Head Feast" has not been rescheduled for 1999 but may be hosted again in the year 2000. Instead, Noble Cause will provide the same color and ceremony when Robert the Bruce and Elizabeth, King and Queen of Scotland, hold court during the festival.
